BBC Radio 3 presents the Z.E.N. Trio
The very best in chamber music, performed by three international stars!
The Z.E.N. Trio – pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – met as BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists in 2015 and have since performed together across Europe, China, Canada and the US, and Australia.
While the trio’s name, “Z.E.N.” is an acronym for the three artists’ initials, it also hints at their philosophy to music making – the forgoing of the self for total togetherness.
Their concert performances have been widely hailed, as have their recordings for Deutsche Grammophon – their 2017 debut album and 2020’s Burning Through the Cold.
They’ll be making their Northern Ireland debut at St.Mark’s Church Dundela – the CS Lewis Church in the east of the city – with a repertoire including Rachmaninov’s Trio élégiaque No.1 in G minor and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.2 in E minor, Op. 67.
A wonderful opportunity to hear musicians at the top of their game.
I can think of few finer young piano trios. The Z.E.N. has remarkable sensitivity and intelligence for an ensemble of this age, and the artists collaborate so knowingly while maintaining their own personal voices.
