This walking tour uncovers Belfast’s hidden connections to slavery and its transformation into a centre of abolitionist activism from the 18th to 19th centuries.

It explores how some of the city’s wealthiest families profited from the transatlantic slave trade before later generations became abolitionist leaders. Stories include a slave owner with a Caribbean plantation named ‘Belfast’, escaped slaves who landed here and a watchmaker who helped destroy the proposed Belfast slave ship company. A powerful journey through a forgotten but vital part of Belfast’s past.

We’ve partnered with the Northern Ireland Tourist Guide Association to offer insightful cultural walking tours during the Festival.
