Between Two Breaths

Between Two Breaths is a collaborative art project by The Drawing Journal investigating the materiality of and relationship between text and drawing and the possibility to translate one through the other.

This exhibition presents outcomes from collaboration between members where they sent each other excerpts of creative writing, drawings and personal objects for mutual examination and re-interpretation. Drawn images are described through text, and prose visualized through drawing. Through this interaction the artists co-inhabit the texts and the images. It is the translation performance of drawing to text, and text to drawing that contributes to creating new meaning.

Working in pairs responding to phrases selected by each other, creating text and drawing responses, each member brings a distinct and deeply personal approach to drawing resulting in works that vary in scale, material, presence and technical execution. This highlights the many forms in which drawing can be interpreted or positioned within contemporary practice.

Through the act of collaboration, The Drawing Journal hope to broaden the conversation on drawing as a medium.

The Drawing Journal has been active since 2019 and its membership recently expanded to include thirteen artists based across Ireland and the UK, with five of its members based at QSS.

Members are: Tamzin Ashcroft, Niamh Clarke, Hannah Clegg, Daniel Coleman, Craig Donald, Julia Entwistle, Sarah Horton, Bernie McAdams, Sharon McKeown, Clare Penketh, Joanne Proctor, Alannah Robbins and Doris Rohr.
