This event brings together the current exhibition of ‘Threads of Empowerment: Conflict Textiles’ International Journey’ in the Ulster Museum with the Northern Irish launch of a book co-edited by its curator, Roberta Bacic.

The book, Arpilleras Poéticas, was published and launched in Chile in December 2023 at the National Museum of Art to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup.

Arpilleras Poéticas brings Latin American poetry into dialogue with textile art from around the world that focuses on elements of conflict and human rights abuses. We will continue that dialogue, with readings of translations of Latin American poetry alongside work on the theme of conflict by poets from the North of Ireland, and a tour of the exhibition with accompanying commentary by its curator. The event will interweave the threads and languages of textile art and poetry to honour all the artists and writers whose work pulls back a curtain to show us the lived experience of conflict across the world.
