Denouement
A Lyric Theatre Production
It’s 2048. Armageddon is on its way.
Edel and Liam are living out the final hours in a remote Irish farmhouse at the base of a mountain. Joking, reminiscing, and arguing, the differences between the two are becoming starkly apparent. Liam frantically rat-a-tats his memories on a battered old typewriter, while Edel clings to connection, desperately trying to reach their family one last time but news from beyond the horizon is bleak.
Amid the collapse of nations, this couple’s relationship stands as a testament to the human spirit as they navigate the end of the world with humour, honesty, and decades of shared history. Are some things better left unsaid, even at the end?
Intensely provocative and wonderfully witty, Denouement is a moving and thought-provoking portrait of an enduring relationship between two ordinary people. Set against an extraordinary apocalyptic backdrop, Denouement asks what remains when everything else is gone. This bold piece of new writing will stay with you long after the curtain closes.
Originally submitted to The Lyric’s New Playwrights Programme, John Morton’s Denouement captivated the selection panel so completely that it was commissioned immediately. Experience its stage debut at the Lyric Theatre.
