Sergei M. Eisenstein: The Language of Cinema
Double Bill: Ivan the Terrible, Parts I and II
Regularly cited on ‘Greatest Films’ lists, the two parts of Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible are epic in scope and awesome in visuals. The first film, released in 1945, was much admired by Stalin, for whom Ivan was a personal hero. Part II however was suppressed by the censors and a third planned film was unfinished at the time of Eisenstein’s death in 1948.
