John Carson | New Work

John Carson is an artist whose practice spans performance, sound, film, installation, sculpture, drawing, photography and public art.

Over several decades he has developed a diverse body of work that explores place, identity, history and the structures through which stories are told and remembered. His projects have taken many forms, from live performances and sound works to television and radio broadcasts, exhibitions and large-scale public art commissions. As both an artist and curator, he has been involved in numerous context-based and socially engaged projects.

Carson’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues including The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin; the ICA, London; CCA, Glasgow; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Australia; the Aine Art Museum, Finland; PS1, New York; New Langton Arts, San Francisco; and The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh.

The exhibition at Golden Thread Gallery centres on Carson Street a  19-minute mockumentary which follows Carson’s personal investigation into the origins of Carson Street in Pittsburgh. Combining humour, research and autobiography, the film traces an unexpected journey across Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, blurring fact and fiction while examining questions of naming, inheritance and belonging.

The GTG exhibition will also include new work; Pittsburgh Street and Same But Different developed from this ongoing project.
