Kindred Ash
Digital Arts Studios: Gwen Stevenson
Kindred Ash is an immersive, interactive installation responding to the decline of Ireland’s native ash trees.
Ash dieback, a fungal disease now widespread across the island, is transforming woodlands and hedgerows, threatening one of Ireland’s most culturally significant native trees and the rich ecosystems it supports.
Within a darkened space, shifting projections, translucent surfaces and spatial sound create an evolving landscape that visitors move through. Drawing on the ecological and cultural memory of the ash tree, the installation evokes a woodland suspended between presence and disappearance, where fleeting forms emerge, dissolve and reappear.
As visitors navigate the installation, their presence subtly influences the environment, creating a continually changing experience in which movement, light and sound become interconnected. The work unfolds differently for each visitor, inviting moments of discovery, reflection and quiet attention.
Rather than presenting ecological loss as something to observe from a distance, Kindred Ash offers a space to consider our relationship with the living world. It is an invitation to slow down, to notice what is changing around us, and to reflect on the fragile connections between people, place and the landscapes we inhabit.
