The Stoop

Every community has its stoop.

A place where people gather, exchange ideas, experiment with identity, and make culture together. Whether found on a city block, in a salon chair, on a dancefloor, in the pages of a magazine, or online, these spaces become magnets for connection. They are sites of creativity, self-expression, and belonging – places where culture is shaped collectively, from the ground up.

Traditionally, the stoop occupies a space between inside and outside: a threshold where neighbours meet, stories circulate, and everyday life unfolds in public view. Neither fully private nor fully public, it is a place of encounter, observation, and exchange.

Presented as a sister project to the Naughton Gallery’s 2025 exhibition, The Big Neighbourhood, The Stoop explores the communities that emerge through shared cultural spaces and practices. Through works inspired by music scenes, fashion movements, queer nightlife, and everyday sites of care and creativity, the exhibition considers how identities are formed, performed, and sustained collectively.

Rather than focusing on grand histories, The Stoop looks to the informal and often overlooked environments where cultural movements begin. It is a celebration of gathering, creativity, and community, and of the enduring power of people coming together to shape the worlds they inhabit.
